Halloween Thoughts

Halloween ThoughtsI thought of Halloween as an American Holiday but as usual when I think I know something, my thinking is wrong.  I probably thought that way because I had not heard of any other countries having a Halloween Holiday.  I wonder if it is practiced in the same way as America does it?

In my childhood the holiday was something I really looked forward to all year long. I knew once school started it wouldn’t be long before I could dress up so no one would know me and head out gathering up all of the candy, popcorn balls and all the many goodies that I could carry. I think my last year to trick or treat I got three large grocery bags full.  I do have to tell you that this was back in the 1950’s in a small town in California.

Halloween ThoughtsTimes changed as it always does and in the 1960’s it became a holiday that wasn’t celebrated as easily as it had been before.  Some real life demons got involved with the trick or treating and killed some children.  Drugs  and poison were added to the popcorn balls as well as ground glass, razor blades and what ever else sick minds could come up with. Everything that was not store bought was x-rayed or thrown away because of the danger.

In the 70’s when my children we big enough to trick or treat they couldn’t go out on the streets as I did and run and laugh. We lived in the country in SE Oklahoma so there were no paved streets lined with houses. They went to Halloween parties and dressed up in their costumes. If it was a church party, costumes were restricted to the non-demonic.  As I grew older I gave up on participating in the holiday at all.  I have to admit, I now hide.

If you want to find out more about the history of the holiday Wikipedia has a great article on the history of the Holiday.  I would like to know how you practice Halloween.  Leave me a comment and let me know your thoughts. Halloween2

I pray that everyone has a safe and happy Halloween, when it happens. We have almost three weeks before it happens here in the states.

The Best Of Times

Standard

televisionWhen I watched this video I knew I had to share it. It is so full of memories for those of us raised in the 50’s and 60’s and will show the younger folks some of what they missed. Whoever put this video together did a great job. The music is great and it reminds me of how much I miss that time. It also reminds me that what goes around comes around. Parents didn’t like the music then and I sure more than a few don’t like today’s music. Isn’t it wonderful to know that Rock N Roll didn’t pull us all down to the pits of hell as everyone thought.

The old TV shows brought a smile to my face. Remembering my Saturday mornings with Rin Tin Tin, The Micky Mouse Club and so many more. I still like to watch Roy Rogers and the Cisco Kid on cable.

I do hope you enjoy this video as much as I did, so you can go back to those days, if only for a few minutes.

Here is a YouTube video that explains flash fiction a little further. I hope you enjoy it. I look forward to reading what you come up with.  Happy writing.

What Is Fiction?

All We Need

Fiction is a lie, an untruth, and for the writer it is a piece of writing using made up facts.  I love writing fiction because it lets me stretch my mind.  Use my imagination to make a world of love, joy, kindness, goodness, all of those Boy and  Girl Scout  ideals we learned so long ago.  I could also make a world so corrupt and dark, you’d cringe when you read the words.  It let’s the writer create whatever they want because it doesn’t have to be true.
As humans, why do we like stories?  They have been around as far back as man’s thinking abilities.  I can imagine a long ago ancestor, telling the family or a group of men how the hunt went that day.  I can see the proverbial “fish story” in the making.  It could have gone something like this; “You know what I saw today when I was hunting game, you’ll never believe it.  I sure didn’t when I first laid eyes on the creature.  You remember that huge rock  down by the lake?  It’s the one that won’t fit inside our cave.  The creature is bigger than the rock.  It is covered with brown hair and walks on two legs.  I could even see fangs hanging out its mouth.  I swear every word I’m telling you is true.”
We tell stories for entertainment, as well as to impart knowledge.  As humans we want to know about our existence, future and past.  The who, what, when, where and why of everything.  If we do not know for certain what the answers are then someone tends to create a story to fit the situation.
Fiction satisfies the need for entertainment.  We can use our imaginations and put ourselves in the world which has been created by the use of fiction.  The use of words and the imagination of us all is what’s needed for fiction.
